In summary, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an increasingly popular treatment for prostate cancer that offers an effective alternative to radical prostatectomy or radiotherapy for patients with localized prostate cancer. It uses high frequency ultrasound waves to precisely target and destroy cancer cells, while leaving healthy tissue intact. Best of all, the procedure has minimal side effects and a very short recovery time compared to other treatments, making it an attractive option for many patients. For these reasons, high intensity focused ultrasound continues to gain popularity as a focal therapy for prostate cancer.

NanoKnife IRE treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that uses high-frequency electrical pulses to destroy cancerous cells. The NanoKnife is inserted into the tumour with MRI scanning guidance, and delivers electrical pulses at each electrode that kill the tumour and leaves surrounding healthy tissue intact. NanoKnife procedures are especially effective at treating areas of the prostate gland that are are hard to access using HIFU. In comparison to traditional treatments such as radiation or surgery, NanoKnife treatment can be completed in less than 2 hours and provides minimal side effects compared to more drastic treatments such as robotic prostatectomy or hormone / radiotherapy therapy.
